Recreational Motorcycle Registration

On 1 May 1999 new laws affecting the registration of recreational vehicles will come into force. A new category of registration, Recreational Motorcycle, will be available to licensed riders for use on local roads and declared forest roads outside of built-up areas. (Built-up areas are defined by speed limits of less than 100 km/h). Reduced fees and limited construction standards that previously applied to recreational vehicles will continue to apply to this category of registration.

VicRoads Country Street Directory of Victoria identifies the roads that will be available to operators of recreational motorcycles. The following table represents the road classifications, code numbers and eligibility status for operators of recreational motorcycles.

There will be no registration facility for previously recreation registered three and four-wheeled vehicles other than full registration, or conditional registration for primary producers, municipalities, and public authorities (and their contractors).

Recreational vehicles, that are either registered or renewed prior to the new law coming into force on May 1 1999, may continue to operate under the existing arrangement until that term of registration expires. Following this, recreational vehicle operators may either:

    1. on private property closed to public access,
    2. with the permission of the land manager, on areas of public land closed to public access,
    3. on areas declared in the Government Gazette as not being subject to registration and licensing requirements.
