June 2001 MTCV Itinerary

Sunday 3rd Highlands (near Yea) Ray Walker leading 10.15 am Whittlesea

Highlands is half way between Yea and Seymour, north of the highway. Interesting hilly country. There are four kilometres of hard packed, sandy dirt near Highlands but don’t panic. It is "easy" dirt, and generally uphill, and over before you know it. Regularly traversed roads around Flowerdale and Strath Creek likely to be incorporated into the route. Expect around 350 for the day.

Thurs. 7th Social Sip, 7 pm Elgin Inn Hotel, 75 Burwood Rd Hawthorn

Collect your magazine and new itineraries. Meet the new Committee. Normally about 20 or so people, all with a common interest. Plenty of stories. Parking easy to find. Be there.

Sunday 10th Inverloch Geoff Barton leading

10.15 am Hallam

This ride may not suit inexperienced riders because of the distances involved, and the variable road conditions prevalent in Gippsland. Having said that, Gippsland offers some of the best motorcycling roads close to Melbourne with spectacular views of the sea. Geoff, living near Loch, has researched the area for many years and knows lots of good roads. We’ll try and control the distance between stops to something reasonable. He just loves to ride and ride and ride. Expect around 450 km for the day. Decent tyres a must. Make the effort, it will be worth it.

Sunday 17th Reefton Spur Tim Walker leading

10.15 am Yarra Glen

Reefton Spur in the middle of winter? Sounds crazy but it isn’t. Too early for the snow traffic, too cold for the 4WD campers, just the road and our bikes. The surface remains surprisingly grippy, even in the wet. Obviously this won’t be the only twisty road Tim has planned for us, so be prepared for a hard day’s ride, even if the distance isn’t much. Expect around 300 km for the day.

Sun. 24th Team Navigation Trial, Romsey Les Leahy leading

10.15 am Whittlesea

Requires almost no brain power, so don’t be frightened off. Usually two teams and two different strategies to solve the basic clues. Last year it was great fun. Les gets to sit in town and watch the mayhem unfold around him. Expect around 350 km for the day. Great country to get lost in!

July

Sunday 1st Kinglake Bruce Saville leading

10.15 am Yarra Glen

Designated short ride for Bruce’s first lead. Come and join him for a leisurely tour of the eastern ranges. Depending on the weather we may find ourselves north of the ranges up around Yea and Alexandra. Expect around 350 km for the day.
