August 2002 MSTCV Itinerary

Sunday 4th       Drouin                                                                                       Ben Warden leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

First stop Drouin via Powelltown and Jindivick after 115 km of varied motorcycling roads – everything from tight twisties to high speed sweepers. After fuel for the TLs we’ll head south along the recently widened and resealed Warragul Korumburra Rd, through Arawata to Dumbalk to lunch at Mirboo North via the tight twisties of Boolara. This stint is 135 km long but will feel much shorter due to the fun factor and flowing nature of the roads. Back to Drouin after a loop through Hallston, the famous Thorpdale road and a smidge of highway after Trafalgar. Another 130 km stretch. Those still hyped up (Pete, Liz, Rob) and looking for more fun can head back to Melbourne via the Powelltown Road. Those totally knackered can cruise back the highway. This ride will not suit inexperienced riders, particularly if it is cold or wet.

Sunday 11th     Broadford (short ride)                                                        Pete Weyermayr leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

A cruise through our nearby eastern ranges. Note the new police station being built in the main street of Kinglake, opposite the bakery. I can see Flowerdale and Strath Creek as route possibilities.  Maybe home via Pyalong and Trawool to break up at Kinglake West.  Expect around 200 km for the day.

Sunday 18th     Eildon via Torbreck River                                                                   Ben Warden leading

                        10.15 am Whittlesea

Ray Walker, marked down to lead this ride, is still out of action. Leaving Whittlesea we’ll head north to Yea and Molesworth (smidge of highway) before cutting across to Alexandra and Fraser National Park to Eildon for early lunch after a pleasant 120 km. After lunch we’ll take in the sights: a trip up to the lookout at the top of Mt Pinninger and a ride across the dam wall. Then we’ll shoot down the “sure-to-be -green” Torbreck River Road, some 37 km of uninterrupted twisties, each way. We may have to refuel at Taggerty for the final ride down to Marysville and the Black Spur to break up at Healesville. A round trip of 310 km for the day.

Sunday 25th     Ballan Hill Climb                                                                                   Geoff Jones leading                        10.15 am West Gate Shell Service Station

Geoff’s special annual event, usually involving his family as time keepers. Ride to the foot of the hill, have a few timed runs up the hill, lowest time wins. Quite simple really. Depending on the weather, we may skoot around the Brisbane Ranges since they are enticingly close. Around 250 km for the day.

September

Sunday 1st       Walhalla Train Ride                                                                          Ron Johnston leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

The route will include Yarra Glen, Powelltown, Noojee and Warragul, first stop after 110 km. Then onto Walhalla via Moe and Tyers for an historic steam train ride. Great roads and scenery. The train ride will cost around $8. Mid-afternoon we’ll head back to Yarra Junction via Willow Grove and Noojee. Plenty of good roads keeping away from the highways. Note: there is no petrol at Walhalla but there is at Rawson, 14 km away, on the way out. Expect around 330 km for the day.
