May 2003           MSTCV Itinerary

Sunday 4th               Kilcunda                                                                                           Ben Warden   leading

                        10.15 am Hallam

Gippsland has some of the best motorcycle roads close to Melbourne. They are designed to carry milk laden tankers and are generally wide, smooth and well maintained. (By the same token, expect the occasional bump, sandy corner and slow moving farm machinery.) After extensive tree felling by the early settlers to produce cattle grazing country, visibility is excellent, inspiring confidence. The added benefit is the expansive views of rolling hills and glimpses of Western Port Bay, Phillip Island and Bass Straight – if you dare. First stop Loch after 110 km. Expect another couple of stops equally spaced picking up place names such as Grantville, Kilcunda (of course), Korumburra and Warragul. Expect around 350 km for the day. Note: conditions may not suit inexperienced riders.

Sunday 11th            Seymour Pub (short ride)                                                                      Ian Payne leading

                        10.15 am Whittlesea

Our lunch ride to Trawool Resort has changed as the venue is now ONLY serving a $39.50 fixed price banquet for the “Mothers Day” lunch.  Therefore we have elected to go elsewhere! A short ride through the eastern ranges will precede the lunch. Those travelling by car should aim to meet us at 1 pm. Expect around 200 km for the day.

Sunday 18th               Brisbane Ranges                                                                       Pete Weyermayr leading                        10.15 am Whittlesea

Geoff Jones was slated to lead this one but will be travelling in New Zealand returning home this day. The Brisbane Ranges are situated west of Werribee and south of Ballan. They offer interesting, smooth, high speed sweepers through very dry forested undulating hills. To get there we’ll head west from Whittlesea to Woodend via Wallan and Romsey. (Alternatively, if the weather is fine, we could head west via Flowerdale, Broadford, Pyalong, Lancefield and Woodend.) Then we’ll head south via Trentham, Blackwood and Ballan for a play in the Ranges. Break-up at Werribee. Expect around 380 km for the day.

Sunday 25th               Trafalgar                                                                                                    Rob Langer  leading

                        10.15 am Yarra Glen

We’ll head out through Healesville, across the Black and Reefton Spurs to Warburton for early lunch after 110 km. Then around through Powelltown, Noojee, Hill End, Willow Grove and Trafalgar for lunch. After Trafalgar we’ll make our way towards Warragul via Mirboo North, then back to Yarra Junction via Neerim South and Powelltown. The roads will vary from heavily forested areas providing tight and twisty roads, well off the beaten track, to open, fast sweepers. Enough twisties to get you through a month. Note: this ride may not suit inexperienced riders. Don’t bring a friend. Expect around 420 km for the day.
