July 2004                     MSTCV Itinerary

Sunday 4th       Lancefield                                                                                              Geoff Jones leading

                        10am Whittlesea

Usual route to Lancefield for first break. If the weather suits Geoff will use the short dirt section north of Pyalong to come into Lancefield via the Burke and Wills Track. Extra activities will be lunch at Gisborne, supplied by Melissa, at her house (replaces Hill Climb Feed). To arrive at Gisborne around 1pm I will do the run to Trentham, Blackwood, Greendale and Bacchus Marsh.  After lunch over Macedon to Romsey, Wallan, Eden Park and Whittlesea (break up). Expect around 350 km for the day.

Sunday 11th     Marysville Bakery                                                                                Dave Ward leading

                        10am Yarra Glen

This is a designated short ride. If you haven’t been to the snow on a bike, this is your opportunity! Incredibly, the Reefton Spur is pretty good in the winter. It has an abrasive coarse bitumen surface specifically designed for cold climates and hence the level of grip remains good, wet or dry. It is only lightly travelled, so it doesn’t deteriorate through over-use.  Route could encompass up and down Chum and Myers Creek roads – if the weather is good – with a stop at Warburton. Then on to Marysville for lunch and break-up. Or we may travel directly to Marysville. Expect around 180 km for the day.

Sunday 18th    Lavers Hill Otway Fly                                                                  Pete Weyermayr  leading

9.30 am west Gate Shell Servo

The GOR offers world famous, spectacular scenery and some of the best (and risky) motorcycle roads. First stop Lorne, if you are late, then Lavers Hill for a quick lunch. Then off to the Otway Fly, a 600 metre long, 25 metre high, elevated tree top walk. It is located 15 minutes past Lavers Hill and is a full blown tourist attraction. It will cost half a tank to get in, but the next best one is in Tasmania! See www.otwayfly.com  for the full blurb. Riding wise, expect 450 km for the day and maybe a late finish.

Sunday 25th     Reefton and Black Spurs                                                                Paul Southwell leading

                        10am Yarra Glen

Paul is wary of the snow and hence if the forecast is dodgy he will be looking to head to less extreme climes. I can see a loop across the Black Spur, up to Alexandra, across to Yea, breaking up in Kinglake. Short and sharp, leaving you panting for more. But if it is a glorious sunny day, we’ll be doing the Reefton for sure. It will be good, whatever happens. Expect around 200 km of twisty roads for the day.

August 2004

Sunday 1st       Trafalgar via Hill End                                                                            Rob Langer leading

                        10 am Yarra Glen

I am looking forward to this ride heading down into Gippsland. I reckon the Hill End road works better in this direction – with the cuttings on the right hand side, improving visibility. Again, this ride is not suitable for inexperienced riders – so don’t bring a friend! Expect around 400 km for the day.

Thurs. 5th        Social Sip, 7pm Whitehorse Inn, 5 Burwood Road Hawthorn.

Catch up with the gossip, have a meal, collect your magazine and save the Club some postage. You never know who you might meet. Last month Leslie Luke, a member in the 70’s and 80’s turned up, ostensibly to catch up with Peter Philferan. He was very entertaining. Expect 20 members and friends.

Sunday 8th       Eildon Poker Run                                                                                Ben Warden  leading

                        10am Whittlesea

Five stops, five cards, best hand wins $40 or a membership. Members only. We’ll string together a few interesting roads up through Caveat and Gobur, first stop Alexandra. Then into Fraser National Park and down to Cotter Bay to check the water level before lunching at Eildon
