Corryong Comfort
After a hard, but rewarding day riding it is a must to have a comfortable place to return to. What makes a ‘place’ comfortable? Generally there is no singular reason for somewhere to reach this status. And Corryong, or more precisely, Ron and Sara’s place just out of Towong, is no exception. I’ll try and share a few of the things that I think make this place comfortable, if not special.
First there is the view. Ron and Sara must have put
a bit of thought into this when they first moved there. Early in the morning
and just before sunset are arguable the best times. I can’t tell you too much
about the early morning times. Generally, all I get to see is the underside of
my chain as a few of us busy ourselves with ongoing ride preparations, but I
have been told by some of the early walkers that this is the time to be alive!
It’s the period just before sunset, during the
after-ride-relax with a cold beer in hand, I can vouch for. It is easy to find
a weary but talkative group on the lawn overlooking the mighty Murrey River
telling tall tails and generally enjoying each other’s company. As a bonus,
when it’s your turn to fetch another round of drinks from the main hut, there
is generally a spectacular sunset happening over the distant hills.
Next is the organisation that goes on behind the
scenes that ensures the three or four days spent at Ron and Sara’s are hassle
free. Julie and Ben put in an enormous effort planning and providing meals,
transport, overall cost’s and ride destinations that allows
the rest of us to feel like valued family.
Some real estate agents quote that ‘location is
everything’. When it comes time to head out, this is certainly true of Ron and
Sara’s place. Located on the western boundary of the
Of course there are a few other details that make a
place comfortable. Familiarity with the lodgings, the people you ride with, and
the sights along the way. But the one thing that truly makes a place special is
the laughs you share when you are feeling comfortable. Then again, I could be
wrong. You will only know after you come up to Ron and Sara’s place on the
hill.
