Today was going to be a leisurely ride because I am still running my bike in and we had two pillions. This morning it was a pleasant ride to Whittlesea from home because I had heated hand grips on my new bike. Bliss! Freezing cold hands no longer. I should have done it years ago. Such is modern technology.
I was first to arrive at Whittlesea followed by Ben, Ha, John and Kate and finally Renzo. After a short brief on where we were going it was time to hit the road. From Whittlesea to Kinglake West, the landscape certainly looks different since it has been burnt. You can see where the buildings used to be, and see through the trees, creating an eerie sort of feeling.
The general store we used to stop at has gone. It’s just a pile of bricks. Kinglake West to Flowerdale is much the same: lots of excavators and dump trucks clearing buildings and cleaning up. There was a large area beside the river where they had chipped a lot of trees and had 100s of metres of mulch stockpiled.
Strath Creek to Broadford is my favourite bit of road. Broadford is the first stop. We pull up outside the bakery and whilst sitting down, Bill and Raihanah ride past on a VTR, not stopping. He had missed us at Whittlesea despite us leaving 15 minutes late.
Between Broadford and Glenaroua we encountered lots of push bikes. They were having races of all age groups, so it was on the go slow department for a while. They weren’t there yesterday when I came through!
On to Pyalong, left into it and right out of it at the other end. Ha missed me corner marking, so John and Kate chased her, and Ben (rear riding) chased both of them. Eventually they all came back and we continued on our merry way to Lancefield.
While I corner marked opposite the pub, Bill and Raihanah turned up. They must have ridden straight to the pub. We all parked our bikes outside the pub. Geoff and Val Jones arrived in the car and Dave Ward arrived a little bit later on. We settled in the dining room where there was a Coonara heater making it warm and cosy. Meals were ordered, drinks were had, and everyone enjoyed themselves. The meals were good.
Time to go home. Ben left first to mow lawns. Dave went his own way. The rest
of us followed the main road to Romsey and then took the Romsey-Wallan-Darraweit road to Wallan. From Wallan to Whittlesea we went
