Mt Hotham to Omeo

Comments

A perfectly surfaced road with lots of room, sweeping bends and good visibility make this road an absolute joy par excellence.

This road winds down the mountains and foothills from Mount Hotham into Omeo. I could only pick two corners where the bitumen was marginally rough. If you like high speed cornering but with the security of loads of room and visibility, then this is the road for you. Views range from the backdrop of the Great Dividing Range, to rolling hills covered with pine plantations. If you're going anywhere near Omeo, make sure you pay this road a visit. Fantastic!

Dinner Plain, 11 km out of Mt Hotham, is well worth a visit. Through the gates, left at the roundabout and up the hill to park outside the cafe offering high quality food and beverages. A much better stopping place than Hotham Heights. Do a loop of the town checking out the very special architecture.

Some of the 65 km/h corners (very fast, downhill) just out of Dinner Plain are showing signs of wear with some rippling and compounding of the bitumen into humps. Eyes open and accurate steering will keep you on track. After this section the road is in brilliant condition.

These roads are becoming more and more patrolled. Best not to travel on long weekends.
