Saturday 23rd to Tuesday 26th
Australia Day Weekend, Jindabyne
Bookings essential, limited places
Ben Warden leading
9.00 am Berwick

The Committee has booked accommodation at the NSW Sport and Recreation Centre in Jindabyne. This is lodge style accommodation with 2 beds per room (7 rooms) with communal bathroom facilities, and a large kitchen/living area with a big screen TV. We have stayed three times before and are so impressed with the cost, quality and food, we thought we had better come back, and back, and ...!

The Australia Day holiday falls on Tuesday 26th of January. Given the distances involved (700 km on the first day and last days), a four day weekend allows us to take full advantage of the great location. The plan is to ride up on Saturday, ride around the Snowy Mountains Sunday and Monday, and return to Melbourne on Tuesday. This means three nights accommodation. You'll need to take annual leave for the Monday.

Typically temperatures are in the high 30's at this time of year, but at this altitude the temperatures will be around 10 degrees cooler making for ideal riding conditions.

As usual, this special event is offered on a strictly first come, first served basis. Preference will be given to members. A $125 deposit is required. The deposit buys three nights accommodation. A BBQ pack is being offered for the first night. The pub $15 steak night (self cook) should do another night meal.

All you need is your toothbrush, a change of clothes and near new tyres. Street legal, race replica tyres will not last much more than two days so regular road tyres are a more sensible option, unless you are prepared to change them.
Ride will not suit inexperienced riders; not recommended for first time Club riders.

Last year: 16 bikes, 1 car, 18 people, 2400 km Berwick to Mansfield or 2650 home to home
No cops, crashes or mechanical failures except one puncture on the Treasurer's Blackbird. Brilliant weather except for 38 deg last day. Extreme tyre wear resulting in two 'Busas sitting out Day 3.

11 bikes, 11 people, 2480 km Berwick to Longwarry North, drizzle first 40 km, then fine 25+ degrees all weekend

Sunday 24th January

Then down again and around the Old Warburton Highway to Gladysdale, Powelltown and Noojee for lunch. The final hop will be back to Longwarry North via the Neerims and Jindivick. The cold weather is approaching but the forecast is for cool weather but no rain until evening. How better to spend the ANZAC Day public holiday other than buried deep in Gippsland enjoying spectacular scenery, great roads, and even better company. The first stop will be at the Korumburra Bakery if you are chasing the ride. From the Bakery we'll push east, maybe even as far as Yarram. If the exploring mood takes hold, then there are roads south of Yarragon that need to be tested - have they made or improved the existing ones? Wherever we go it will be exciting!

Although not unexpected, it was still a shock as twelve months ago during her annual medical exam she was diagnosed with an 'enlarged aorta' which, according to the Specialist, could rupture at any time. At her age (83), it was un-operable, so we were partially prepared for this outcome."

So many good roads, so little daylight... As an alternative to the well worn straight and boring roads out of town, I'll take a different set of straight and boring roads out of town, via Bayles - different scenery at least.
As we begin the climb into the Gippsland hills we have the option, if the weather is good, to take a more scenic back road (including 2km of good dirt), or a slightly longer route if the roads are wet, to emerge on the infamous Warragul-Korrumburra Rd. Through Bena, and across to Grantville for fuel and a break after 137km.

Great road and dirt riding country abounds. Mt Buffalo offers a sensational 25 km climb to the scenic Chalet and lookouts. Nearby are good half-day rides to Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Dartmouth Dam or full day rides into the Snowy Mountains and some of the best roads in the world. Who can forget Tawonga and Granya Gaps? On the flip side there are lots of fire trails and mountain tracks offering spectacular views of the surrounding alps, most of which can only be reached by 4WD or dirt bike. So, bring your road and dirt bikes, the missus and kids, the 4WD, pushbikes and swim shoes, ready for a great holiday.

Supermarket shopping is available at Bright, 6 km away.

The Club usually secures some unpowered sites "under The Willows". Another good option is to rent self contained cabins for the week. Ring 03-5756-2235 to secure a cabin or a powered site. Otherwise tell Ian Payne of your intention to camp with the group. Do it now.

Alternatively, there are also budget motels and hotels nearby.

Cancellation Policy: it is critical that if you are going to camp that you camp with the Club and not elsewhere. Otherwise there is no benefit to booking a group site; worse, it costs the Club money. This year we will probably only book two sites (which accommodate two or three tents) to minimise the financial risk - unless there are firm bookings throughout the period.

So, if you intend to camp at the "The Willows" (the usual unpowered sites the Club reserves) then please advise Ian Payne (see "Contacts" for his details) by COB 23rd September . An email to the Google Group went out on Friday 17th September informing Members of this requirement.

A payment of $15 per night per person is required to reserve a spot. This is currently not refundable (it depends on the Mt Buffalo Caravan Park cancellation policy, currently being investigated.)

13 bikes, 26 people (17 members), 2400 km (6 organised day rides), weather perfect 24-30 range with one hot 37 deg day (41 in Melb)
