January 2010Sunday 3rd January Reefton Spur Ben Warden leading 10 am Berwick Proposed route: Berwick, Harkaway, Cockatoo, Upper Pakenham, Gembrook, Yarra Junction, Old Warburton Rd, Warburton (first break), Reefton, Lake Mountain, Marysville, Black Spur, Healesville, Kinglake. 14 bikes, 14 people, 255 km, 21 deg.
17 bikes, 17 people, 440 km, 23 deg., destination same as above
The Committee has booked accommodation at the NSW Sport and Recreation Centre in Jindabyne. This is lodge style accommodation with 2 beds per room (7 rooms) with communal bathroom facilities, and a large kitchen/living area with a big screen TV. We have stayed three times before and are so impressed with the cost, quality and food, we thought we had better come back, and back, and ...! The Australia Day holiday falls on Tuesday 26th of January. Given the distances involved (700 km on the first day and last days), a four day weekend allows us to take full advantage of the great location. The plan is to ride up on Saturday, ride around the Snowy Mountains Sunday and Monday, and return to Melbourne on Tuesday. This means three nights accommodation. You'll need to take annual leave for the Monday. Typically temperatures are in the high 30's at this time of year, but at this altitude the temperatures will be around 10 degrees cooler making for ideal riding conditions. As usual, this special event is offered on a strictly first come, first served basis. Preference will be given to members. A $125 deposit is required. The deposit buys three nights accommodation. A BBQ pack is being offered for the first night. The pub $15 steak night (self cook) should do another night meal. All you need is your toothbrush, a change of clothes and
near new tyres. Street legal, race replica tyres will not last much
more than two days so regular road tyres are a more sensible option,
unless you are prepared to change them.

Then on to Tooborac where we'll observe the trials and meet 90 minutes later at 1 pm. This will give us ample time to be mesmerised by the brilliance and skill of trials riders. Though food is available, we'll have a "proper" lunch in Broadford travelling via Nulla Vale and Pyalong. After food and fuel we'll head for Flowerdale, Kinglake, and Chum Creek to finish at Healesville at 4 pm. Although not unexpected, it was still a shock as twelve months ago during her annual medical exam she was diagnosed with an 'enlarged aorta' which, according to the Specialist, could rupture at any time. At her age (83), it was un-operable, so we were partially prepared for this outcome." The funeral service will be held on Wednesday the 2nd of June at 10 am
A wake will be held afterwards at Tobin Brothers. All welcome.
15 people
The plan is to celebrate this significant milestone, have a meal and share a few laughs. If you would like to participate, have any memorabilia - photos, etc please respond to Ben Warden with numbers. This will facilitate deciding which venue. Of course, speed is of the essence. (Our Club motto!) Feel free to distribute to former members and friends of the MSR.
The plan is to head out through Eden Park (8 consecutive corners) to
Wallan, Romsey, Woodend and around the back way to Trentham for
morning tea. Then on to Spring Hill, Glenlyon, Daylesford, Blampied,
Creswick and the Ballarat servo and Subway for fuel and lunch. Expect
it to be very cold. Wear your full wet weathers just to keep the wind
chill at bay. Then on to Snake Valley and Linton through the gold rush
diggings before turning east and heading for home picking up Mt
Mercer, Meredith and the Brisbane Ranges to break up on the outskirts
of Werribee. Great, hand picked roads. Expect an easy 375 km for the
day. No sun glare today as we'll have the sun at our backs for most of
the day.
According to Cliff the route will be as follows: Berwick to
Longwarry, Jindivick, Cross Over, and Old Sale Road to reach
Moe for morning tea and fuel after 115 kms. Then on to Erica, Rawson

Thompson Dam. Back to Rawson into Walhalla for lunch - 81 km. Back to
Tyers fuel - 37 km. Head to Yallourn North, Willow Grove. Hill End, Noojee

Short ride to finish at the impressive Thresherman's Bakery in
Carlton. Wide range of cheap foods with coffee facilities and lots of
indoor and out door seating.
The route will include Flowerdale, Strath Creek, Broadford and
Pyalong for morning tea at Lancefield after 115 km. Only good roads
so far. After the break we'll head up the Burke and Wills Track to
Redesdale, across the Dam Wall at Lake Eppalock and back to Mia Mia on
narrow back roads before lunching at Heathcote opposite the bakery
after another 123 km. Life Member and local, Les Leahy, may pay us a
social call. After lunch we.ll head back down the highway to Tooborac
branching off to Emu Flat down to Pyalong and Lancefield. Depending on
the light (shortest Sunday of the year), we'll either head down to
Romsey to finish at Wallan (100 km) or head across to Woodend (90km)
and finish at Bulla via Bolinda (70 km). A myriad of interesting back
roads with lots of ancient volcanic scenery.
So many good roads, so little daylight... As an alternative to the
well worn straight and boring roads out of town, I'll take a different
set of straight and boring roads out of town, via Bayles - different
scenery at least.

problematic on this ride so stock up on coffee and food here. On to

uphill sandy dirt) to Thorpdale and then around to Trafalgar for fuel

devised an optional 75km circuit, returning through Mirboo Nth to pick
up those who opt for a longer lunch, before working our way up to

Sunday 26th 2009 to Sunday 2nd January 2011
Over the past 10 years the Club has camped for about a week at the Mt Buffalo Caravan Park. Situated on the fork of the Ovens and Buckland Rivers it offers a fantastic range of activities including swimming, fishing and bush walking. Close by is the Smoko Trout Farm, the "Wandi Pub", the Hedge Maze, various berry, deer and nut farms, and an alpaca ranch. The famous Milawa wineries and cheese factory are close by. Great road and dirt riding country abounds. Mt Buffalo offers a sensational 25 km climb to the scenic Chalet and lookouts. Nearby are good half-day rides to Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Dartmouth Dam or full day rides into the Snowy Mountains and some of the best roads in the world. Who can forget Tawonga and Granya Gaps? On the flip side there are lots of fire trails and mountain tracks offering spectacular views of the surrounding alps, most of which can only be reached by 4WD or dirt bike. So, bring your road and dirt bikes, the missus and kids, the 4WD, pushbikes and swim shoes, ready for a great holiday. Supermarket shopping is available at Bright, 6 km away. The Club usually secures some unpowered sites "under The Willows". Another good option is to rent self contained cabins for the week. Ring 03-5756-2235 to secure a cabin or a powered site. Otherwise tell Ian Payne of your intention to camp with the group. Do it now. Alternatively, there are also budget motels and hotels nearby. Cancellation Policy: it is critical that if you are going to camp that you camp with the Club and not elsewhere. Otherwise there is no benefit to booking a group site; worse, it costs the Club money. This year we will probably only book two sites (which accommodate two or three tents) to minimise the financial risk - unless there are firm bookings throughout the period. So, if you intend to camp at the "The Willows" (the usual unpowered sites the Club reserves) then please advise Ian Payne (see "Contacts" for his details) by COB 23rd September . An email to the Google Group went out on Friday 17th September informing Members of this requirement. A payment of $15 per night per person is required to reserve a spot. This is currently not refundable (it depends on the Mt Buffalo Caravan Park cancellation policy, currently being investigated.) 13 bikes, 26 people (17 members), 2400 km (6 organised day rides), weather perfect 24-30 range with one hot 37 deg day (41 in Melb) 2011 Calendar
